Iperu Remo Community in Shock Over Rumour of Oba Basibo’s Death

The community of Iperu Remo in Ogun State is in shock following a circulating rumour that His Royal Majesty, Oba Idowu Basibo (Odoru V), the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, has passed away. The news, which emerged on the evening of February 6, 2025, has sparked deep concerns, especially among the indigenous people due to the cultural rituals that follow such a loss.

One of the most significant traditions is the Oro, a solemn ritual that requires all women in the community to remain indoors until it is completed. This practice, deeply rooted in cultural beliefs, has amplified the emotional distress caused by the rumour.

The timing of the alleged death adds to the grief, coming exactly one year after the burial of Oba Basibo’s wife, Olori Kehinde Idowu Basibo-Odoru, further deepening the mourning in the community.

While local leaders have not yet confirmed the rumour, the possibility of impending ritual rites has left residents bracing for restrictions on daily life, particularly for women who are expected to comply with the Oro injunction.

The community remains in a state of uncertainty, awaiting confirmation from the palace and authorities. Elders and traditional leaders are expected to meet in the coming days to decide on the next steps, and residents are urged to stay informed through official channels.
