The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has been the second supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran since 1989, fears assasination in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. In case he is killed, he has already chosen three potential successors who will assume his current leadership position.
Khamenei has not disclosed the names of the three senior Iranian officials publicly but his influential son, Mojtaba, is certainly not on the list. His decision was prompted by Israeli strikes on senior Iranian and Hezbollah commanders.
He now performs his administrative functions in a fortified bunker, according to an investigative report by The New York Times on Saturday.
