Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has sent a clear message to the European Union ahead of next week’s UK–EU summit, stating that any backroom deal that fails to serve Britain’s national interest or undermines Brexit will be swiftly overturned.
In a letter to Pedro Serrano, the EU’s ambassador to the UK, Badenoch reaffirmed her commitment to protecting the sovereignty and freedoms secured through Brexit. She outlined five key tests that any agreement must meet, including maintaining control over immigration, safeguarding UK fishing rights, and ensuring that no judicial or legislative powers are handed over to Brussels.
Badenoch’s stance comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares to host EU leaders at the summit on May 19, where discussions on trade, security, and economic cooperation are expected to take center stage. However, Badenoch has warned that any concessions made by the current government that compromise Britain’s independence will be reversed if the Conservatives return to power.
“It is important that I stress that the next Conservative government under my leadership would not remain bound by terms that failed the five tests set out above and damaged the interests of the United Kingdom and its people,” Badenoch stated in her letter.
