The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon saw another year of East African dominance, as Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes claimed top spots in the prestigious 42km race.
In the men’s category, Kenya’s Edwin Kibet clinched victory, crossing the finish line in 2:14:06 to win the $50,000 grand prize. Kibet, who previously won the marathon in 2023 and finished third last year, secured his second title in Lagos.
Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa triumphed in the women’s race, clocking 2:37:04 to claim her first-ever win in the competition.
On the Nigerian front, Nyango Gyang Boyi made history as the first local athlete to finish, securing 8th place overall with a time of 2:25:41.58. His strong performance earned him a $4,000 prize and an additional ₦2 million as the fastest Nigerian in the race.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also participated in the marathon, which started at Western Avenue, Surulere, in front of the National Stadium and ended at Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.
The 2025 edition attracted thousands of runners, further cementing its reputation as one of Africa’s premier long-distance races. Recognized as a Gold Label event by World Athletics in 2023, the marathon continues to gain international recognition, drawing elite athletes from across the globe.
