Ladi Adebutu, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, was released early Tuesday morning following his detention and interrogation by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Adebutu’s release was confirmed by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, in a phone conversation with Channels Television.
His arrest on Monday was initially disclosed by the Publicity Secretary of the Ogun State PDP, Kayode Adebayo, who stated that Adebutu was being held at the Ogun State DSS Command in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Reports indicate that Adebutu was invited for questioning regarding alleged disturbances during the local government elections held on Saturday.
In a statement issued earlier, the PDP said:
“This is to inform members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, that the leader of the party has indeed been detained by the DSS on charges yet unknown.
“However, our principal has urged calm and directed all members of the party, supporters, and well-wishers to remain assured that this period will pass, as it is one of the sacrifices for our democracy.
“Several efforts to secure his release as of 10 pm on Monday, 18th November 2024, whether on personal recognition or through a surety, were unsuccessful. His lawyers have been informed and will take appropriate action by Tuesday morning.
“By this notice, we want our people and the general public to be informed about his situation and to maintain calm and peace until this matter is resolved.”
