The Lagos State government has declared that individuals caught sharing or forwarding child pornography or obscene publications involving children on social media face a 14-year jail term under the state’s domestic and sexual violence law.

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, revealed this during a workshop for headteachers, teachers, social workers, and school counselors in Lagos.

She emphasized that sharing such materials is a criminal offense, explaining the severe legal consequences and the harmful effects of pornography on cognitive behavior, especially in children. Vivour-Adeniyi urged participants to avoid forwarding obscene videos and use their roles to safeguard children’s rights.

She noted that the Lagos State government has consistently worked to build the capacity of stakeholders in protecting children and ensuring their rights are upheld. The workshop aimed to equip school staff and social workers with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond appropriately to cases of domestic and sexual violence involving children.

She concluded by highlighting the importance of proactive reporting, stating that stakeholders must act as mandated reporters to protect children in their care.
