Protesters marking the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS movement were met with teargas by Lagos State Police Command officers at the Lekki Toll Gate.

The protesters, who gathered at 8:30 am with banners and placards, demanded full implementation of the reports submitted by judicial panels of inquiry established after the 2020 protests.

Eyewitnesses reported injuries and arrests as protesters fled the scene. “I fell into the gutter while running from the teargas,” said Excel, a protester. “I was hit on the head.” Another protester, Bayo Are, confirmed: “I was hit, but I’m not seriously injured. Some people were arrested.”

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin stated that officers dispersed the protesters to prevent traffic disruption, claiming minimal force was used.

The #EndSARS movement began in October 2020, with nationwide protests against police brutality, harassment, and extortion. Despite judicial panels’ recommendations, many remain unimplemented almost four years later, sparking continued calls for reform.
