Councillor Jason Jackson has officially been sworn in as the Mayor of Islington, marking a historic milestone as the borough’s first Black mayor. Jackson, a Nigerian-born British politician, takes on this esteemed role after serving as Islington’s Deputy Mayor.

Born in Nigeria and raised in Hackney, Jackson’s journey to leadership has been shaped by his commitment to public service and community advocacy. His tenure as a councillor saw him champion initiatives such as the Young Black Men and Mental Health program, as well as efforts to promote youth employment and innovation.

During his inaugural address, Mayor Jackson emphasized his dedication to celebrating diversity, supporting local businesses, and fostering thriving neighborhoods. He also announced his chosen charity for the year, Islington Giving, which works to improve mental health services and create employment opportunities for young people.

“It’s an honor to serve as Mayor of the borough that helped shape me, a place that is home to incredible people, bold ideas, and strong communities,” Jackson stated. “This year, I’ll focus on celebrating our diversity, backing local businesses, and helping every neighborhood thrive because when we work together, we all thrive.”
