In a recent interview, Melinda French Gates shared her reasons for ending her 27-year marriage to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, citing a lack of trust and intimacy as key factors. She emphasized that the decision wasn’t based on a single incident but rather a culmination of issues that made the relationship unhealthy.
Reflecting on the emotional toll, Melinda described the period following the separation as “unbelievably painful,” noting that she shed “a lot of tears for many days.” She recounted moments of lying on the floor, overwhelmed by the situation, and acknowledged the anger and grief that accompanied the process. Despite these challenges, she expressed that she is now “starting to get to the other side” and feels “excited about what’s to come.”
In her new memoir, The Next Day, Melinda delves deeper into her journey of healing and personal growth post-divorce. She also revealed that she is in a new relationship, describing it as “pretty great” and expressing happiness in this new chapter of her life.
Bill Gates has acknowledged the divorce as “tough” and one of his biggest regrets, though he maintains that the marriage brought meaningful outcomes, including their children and shared philanthropic work.
