Netflix, the global streaming giant once seen as a transformative force for Nollywood, has quietly ended its operations in Nigeria. After launching in 2016 and collaborating with the Nigerian film industry for eight years, the platform officially exited in November 2024.
While the public remained largely unaware, key stakeholders in Nollywood were left to face the consequences of the withdrawal. Reports indicate that Netflix privately informed its regular collaborators of its decision to scale back on acquiring Nigerian content.
Renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, a prominent figure in Nigerian cinema, confirmed the move during the 2024 Zuma Film Festival. Afolayan shared that while his hit series Anikulapo managed to secure a third season, many of his colleagues were not as fortunate.
Describing Netflix’s exit as a major setback for Nollywood, Afolayan also called it a necessary wake-up call. He urged the Nigerian film industry to reduce its dependence on international platforms and instead focus on building sustainable, homegrown systems that celebrate and preserve indigenous storytelling.
A video of Afolayan’s remarks, which has since gone viral, underscores the urgency for Nollywood to chart a new course amid shifting global dynamics.
