The search for a new coach for Nigeria’s senior national team appears to be nearing its end, with Eric Chelle, the former coach of Mali, emerging as the top choice.
According to sources, Chelle is expected to be officially announced as the new coach within the next two weeks.
Chelle, who was previously sacked as Mali’s coach after two years, was approached to return to his former role following a player revolt.
However, he has declined the offer and is now set to take the reins of the Super Eagles.
The former Lens defender has the backing of a former NFF president, who believes he has the necessary experience and skills to lead Nigeria to success.
Chelle’s achievements, including leading Mali to the last AFCON, are seen as a major factor in his appointment.
While other candidates, such as Steve McClaren and Tom Saintfeit, are still being considered, Chelle is the frontrunner for the position. Herve Renard, another contender, has been ruled out due to his high financial demands.
A member of the NFF’s technical committee has confirmed that the final decision will be made next week, and any reports prior to the official announcement are speculative.
