The World Trade Organization (WTO) confirmed on Saturday that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director-General, is the sole nominee for a second four-year term.

Norwegian Ambassador Petter Ølberg, chair of the General Council, informed WTO members that no other candidates were nominated by the 8 November deadline, setting the stage for Dr. Okonjo-Iweala to continue leading the organization.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, the WTO’s first African and first female Director-General, formally expressed her interest in a second term in a letter to the General Council Chair on 16 September. The WTO then opened the official appointment process on 8 October, allowing member countries one month to submit additional nominations.

Ambassador Ølberg stated that the General Council would outline the next steps in the appointment process soon, following WTO’s established procedures (WT/L/509). With no additional candidates, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is likely to be reappointed, ensuring continuity during a critical period for the WTO.

Her current term ends on 31 August 2025. Since taking office, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has championed a reform agenda for the WTO, positioning the organization to address global trade challenges more effectively.
