The Niger State Government has announced the cancellation of all public Eid-el-Kabir celebrations across the state in response to the devastating flood disaster that has claimed over 200 lives in Mokwa Local Government Area.

Governor Umaru Bago, in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, directed that all elaborate Sallah festivities, including Hawan Bariki and Durbar, be suspended as a mark of respect for the victims and their families.

“This decision was taken to allow for a period of mourning, prayer, and reflection,” the statement read. “The Mokwa flood, described as one of the worst in decades, has left families bereaved, homes destroyed, and livelihoods shattered. It is only fitting that we honor the departed souls and support the affected communities during this difficult time.”

The governor urged citizens to use the occasion to pray for the victims and engage in acts of charity to assist those displaced by the disaster. Emergency response agencies have been directed to intensify relief efforts to ensure adequate support for affected families.
