The Federal Government has received a donation of 1 million doses of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

The World Health Organization (WHO) prequalified this vaccine in December 2023, paving the way for increased access. WHO recommends its use in preventing malaria in children.

This vaccine is the second malaria vaccine to receive prequalification status, following the RTS, S/AS01 vaccine in July 2022. Both vaccines have proven safe and effective.

Dr. Muyi Aina, CEO of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to protecting Nigerian lives during the handover ceremony in Abuja.
