The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has categorically denied reports alleging that suspects arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protest in August are in their custody.

Clarifying the situation, NCoS Spokesperson Umar Abubakar stated that the 76 suspects, mostly minors who appeared malnourished, were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja due to lack of space in custodial centers.

Abubakar emphasized that the NCoS operates in accordance with international best practices and the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019. This legislation prohibits admitting juveniles to adult facilities and overcrowding in custodial centers.

The NCoS prioritizes professionalism, human rights, and rehabilitation, adhering to the United Nations Minimum Standard Rules for the Treatment of Juvenile Offenders.

The NCoS has initiated reforms to address systemic challenges and enhance transparency. Key reforms include clear operational guidelines, improved training for custodial officers, and elimination of discriminatory practices.

These reforms demonstrate the NCoS’s commitment to institutional reform and improved service delivery.
