Peter Fregene, former goalkeeper of the Green Eagles, has died after a prolonged illness. Segun Odegbami, a longtime friend and ex-international, announced the sad news on Sunday.
Fregene, affectionately known as ‘Apo’ or ‘Flying Cat,’ passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife, Tina, and two children. He had been on life support for a week.
Odegbami had previously sought financial assistance for Fregene’s medical care, highlighting the need for a functional welfare system for retired athletes in Nigeria.
Fregene’s legacy includes outstanding performances for Nigeria’s national team in the 1960s and 70s, notably at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. His agility and shot-stopping ability earned him iconic status.
