Nigerian Government Files Criminal Charges Against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially filed criminal charges against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following statements she made during a live television interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on April 3, 2025.

The charges, filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, cite allegations that the senator made defamatory claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, accusing them of plotting to assassinate her. The government has invoked Section 391 of the Penal Code Law, Cap 89, Laws of the Federation, 1990, which penalizes statements that could harm an individual’s reputation.

During the interview, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that her security detail was withdrawn, leaving her vulnerable to attacks. She further claimed that a meeting took place where plans were made to eliminate her.

This legal action comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding the Nigerian Senate, including allegations of misconduct, security intimidation, and suppression of dissenting voices
