Nigerian University Non-Teaching Staff Embark on Indefinite Strike

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities has directed its members to begin an indefinite nationwide strike. The strike, starting October 27, 2024, protests the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries.

The strike affects two major unions: the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). Despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval to pay 50% of the withheld salaries, the Minister of Finance’s inaction has raised concerns about the government’s commitment.

The strike will disrupt university operations, impacting academic activities and students’ learning experiences. The Joint Action Committee regrets the situation and appreciates members’ commitment to the cause.

The strike aims to pressure the government to address the issue and ensure payment of withheld salaries. A Trade Group Council Meeting of NASU branches in universities and inter-university centres was held on October 23-24, 2024, at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
