Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has unveiled a small private vegetable garden in the State House as her contribution to the nation’s food drive.
This was revealed in a video posted on X platform by TVC television, in which Mrs Tinubu said the garden has at least seven types of vegetable including spinach, water leaf, bitter leaf, Ewedu, lemon grass, scent leaf and okro.
The first lady highlighted the power of individual actions, stating that while single efforts may seem small, they can collectively make a substantial difference in advancing the food security initiative, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts to drive meaningful change.
She said: “I am trying to be a farmer because we need food in Nigeria and everybody should try to grow something. I didn’t know what I can add to State House and I thought a private vegetable garden will be nice, that has very good health benefits. I have Okro, Ewedu, water leaf, vegetables, lemon and bitter leaf.
“For me, this is my own contribution to food drive and I believe that anybody can do it and my young friends are here to see us unveil this, so that they too can be challenged.
“This little garden will be able to provide healthy vegetables enough for my household and I would definitely be able to let some of my staff have as well.
“The solution to any problem lies in everyone contributing their own quota to getting that solution. As a leader, I must show example and plant my own garden.
“This will also enhance communal living and help drive the food security campaign of the Federal Government. The vegetables are medicinal and the garden is to lead by example for other women to embrace smart gardening.”
Also, on her X account on Saturday, she advised Nigerian women to get involved in farming to boost food production in the country.
“#EveryHomeAGarden competition by the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI is not just a competition. It aims to inculcate the habit of farming and food production into the society right from the family unit and promote eating healthy foods.
“Earlier today, I was at my garden to tend to it and water my plants myself. I have planted 7 different vegetables.
“I would like to encourage all Nigerian women to join the #EveryHomeAGarden competition and get involved in farming and food production,” she wrote.
