NLC Demands Withdrawal Of Tax Bills, Urges Focus On Citizens’ Welfare In 2025

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated its call for the withdrawal of the Tax Reform Bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly. The organization insists that all key national stakeholders must be involved in the legislative process to ensure fairness and inclusivity.

The bills have sparked criticism, particularly from the northern region, where they are perceived as counterproductive to regional growth.

In its New Year message, NLC President Joe Ajaero urged governments at all levels to prioritize citizens’ welfare and emphasized the need for an upward wage review to address the rising cost of living.

The statement, titled “In 2025, Hope Is in Our Collective Resolve,” encouraged Nigerians to unite in overcoming the challenges of underdevelopment. It highlighted the importance of social dialogue, transparency, and inclusivity in governance.

The NLC further called for access to essential services such as healthcare, education, housing, and security, emphasizing that these are fundamental expectations of citizens and workers.

The Congress also announced plans for a national dialogue in Ibadan in January 2025, aimed at co-creating a tax law that would gain broader acceptance and drive national development.

As 2025 begins, the NLC stressed the importance of industrial peace and urged the federal government to honor agreements with trade unions, pursue people-centered policies, and adopt an inclusive approach to governance.
