The 2-day warning strike of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commenced today, with part compliance in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun and other states.
In Abuja, the nation’s capital, some government ministries, departments and agencies are currently shut in solidarity with the two-day nationwide strike declared by the NLC. Reports say that the Federal Secretariat on Tuesday morning alongside other major office buildings were deserted as workers decided to stay back home.
Banks located in the areas were also under lock and key, with major commercial banks saying there will be no banking operations due to the strike declared by the NLC.
In Lagos, workers of Ikeja Electric were locked out of their offices as some members of the union manned the gate to turn customers back. However, the industrial action order did not have any effect at the Lagos State Secretariat where workers were seen going about their regular business.
In Edo state, the NLC has barred entrance into the state high court premises in compliance with a two-day warning strike. The election petitions tribunals for the National Assembly and state House of Assembly had scheduled judgements in two petitions for today but they have been adjourned till Thursday.
The case is the same in Ogun state, where member unions of the NLC are observing the strike at many offices and establishments. In Oyo state, the mini gates at the University College Hospital were closed.
According to the NLC, the 2-day warning strike is in protest against the Federal Government’s failure to address the challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.
The labour union is accusing the Federal Government of abandoning the negotiations and failing to implement some of the resolutions from previous meetings with the government.
