The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90, marking the end of a brief but notable reign as the 43rd monarch of the ancient Yoruba city.

According to multiple sources, the revered traditional ruler died in the early hours of Monday during ongoing celebrations marking both his 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his coronation.

Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin’s death comes just two days after his milestone birthday. He was officially presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, when he ascended the throne following the death of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun.

A reliable insider within the Olubadan-In-Council reportedly confirmed the news in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. “We received the message that the paramount ruler passed away this morning. He has joined his forefathers. Though it has to be officially announced by the state government,” the source told The PUNCH.

Another palace source also confirmed the passing, stating that Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja—a former governor of the state and next in line to the throne is currently out of the country but is expected to return soon.

“We are expecting a former Governor of the State and the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who is currently out of the country, to come back home. He must have been briefed,” the source added.

The official announcement from the Oyo State Government is still being awaited as Ibadan prepares to mourn the passing of a respected monarch who served during a pivotal time in the city’s history.
