The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has released #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, after detaining him at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Sowore’s passport was seized, and the NIS contacted the Department of State Service (DSS) before releasing him.
Sowore was arrested upon arrival in Nigeria due to a DSS watchlist. He confirmed his release, stating, “I have just been released. My passport and everything have been returned to me.”
The DSS had issued a memo ordering Sowore’s arrest upon arrival, citing his involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests and upcoming October 1 demonstration. Sowore had criticized the DSS for prioritizing political vendettas over addressing Nigeria’s insecurity.
Sowore’s detention and release come amid ongoing tensions between the government and activists advocating for change in Nigeria.
