Tragedy has struck Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, as a promising law student, Ajana Isabella, reportedly died after being denied timely access to her diabetes medication, a heartbreaking incident that has ignited widespread grief and fury among students and the general public.
Isabella, a resident of Elmada Hostel, was said to have lost her room key along with her roommates. Desperate to retrieve her insulin from inside the locked room, the students approached the hostel mistress, known as Madam Bright, for a spare key.
To their horror, they were allegedly told to pay ₦120,000 before access could be granted—despite repeated pleas that Isabella’s life depended on the medication.
“She was visibly distressed and weak. We begged Madam Bright to open the room or give us a key because Ajana needed her insulin, but she insisted we must pay ₦120,000. We were still trying to raise the money when Ajana collapsed,” one of the students, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted tearfully.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Sunday, July 6. Although her fellow students rushed her to the hospital, Isabella tragically passed away on Wednesday, July 9.
Her untimely death has shaken the university community, sparking a wave of protests and calls for justice both on campus and across social media. The hashtag #Justice4Ajana is now trending as students demand accountability from the hostel authorities.
“This was not just a tragedy—it was entirely avoidable,” said a student activist. “We cannot continue to let lives be lost due to inhumane hostel policies and sheer negligence.”
Many are now calling on university authorities and relevant government agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly, sanction those found culpable, and ensure that no student ever suffers such a fate again.
