Monday Edo Igbinidu, the renowned Nigerian musician, also known as Monday Edosomwan Igbinidu, has taken legal action against the up-and-coming artist, Crown Uzama, popularly known as Shalipopi, for alleged copyright infringement.

In a formal letter sent through Igbinidu’s legal representatives, Chris Otasowie & Associates, on July 25, the veteran musician demanded N200 million from Shalipopi for sampling his song “Ovonramwen” without authorization in Shalipopi’s own record titled “Obapluto.”

Additionally, the letter requested a public apology from the rising star for the unauthorized use of the copyrighted material.

The legal action comes as a result of the alleged infringement, and the veteran artist seeks to protect his intellectual property rights in light of the sampling of his song without proper consent. The matter is now in the hands of the court as both parties seek resolution and clarity on the issue.

Parts of the letter read:

“To pay the sum of N200,000,00.00 (Two hundred million naira) only as damages to our client for the infringement on his copyright.

“A written apology published in at least two notable and widely read Newspapers and on all social media handles used by you for the promotion of your infringement of our client’s copyright.”
