Pastor Tobi Adegboyega Sparks Controversy by Calling Davido a “Gospel Artiste”

Nigerian pastor Tobi Adegboyega, based in the UK, has sparked controversy by referring to Afrobeats superstar Davido as a “gospel artiste” during a recent podcast appearance. Adegboyega’s definition of gospel as “good news” led him to categorize Davido’s music, including his hit song “Stand Strong,” as uplifting and fitting within the gospel narrative.

The pastor’s comments were in response to criticism over his decision to feature secular artists, such as Zlatan, at his birthday celebration. Adegboyega emphasized the importance of surrounding himself with loving and supportive friends, rather than traditional gospel artistes who may criticize his unconventional approach to ministry.

Adegboyega’s stance has raised eyebrows, with some questioning his decision to blur the lines between secular and gospel music. However, the pastor remains unapologetic, stating that his friends will continue to perform at his events, which will only grow in scale as his circle of friends expands.

By labeling Davido a “gospel artiste,” Adegboyega is challenging traditional notions of what it means to be a gospel artist. His approach to ministry, which prioritizes relationships and inclusivity over traditional genre boundaries, is sure to spark further debate and discussion.
