The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two members of a gunrunning syndicate in the Mushin area.

The suspects, Sherrif Mustapha, 42, and Suturat Lateef, 28, were apprehended with nine automatic rifles, three walkie-talkies, nine international passports, and several rounds of ammunition.

The arrests were made by detectives from the Commissioner of Police tactical unit in Surulere around 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Another member of the gang managed to escape when the police arrived. This arrest comes shortly after police officers detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, causing a bomb scare in Lagos on Thursday.

The suspects are currently being interrogated at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja by a team led by State Commissioner Adegoke Fayoade. Items recovered from the gang include two AK-47 rifles, a K2 assault rifle, a red rufer rifle, three pump-action rifles, two locally-made single-barrel pistols, five magazines, 57 live cartridges, 70 rounds of 5.56 ammunition, 27 rounds of 9mm ammunition, one expended 5.56 round, a dagger, three walkie-talkies, and nine international passports.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrests and the recovery of the weapons and ammunition.
