In a historic ceremony at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV was officially inaugurated as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church, marking the beginning of his papacy. The event drew an estimated 200,000 attendees, including world leaders, clergy, and faithful from across the globe.

During the solemn Mass, Pope Leo XIV received the symbols of his office, including the Fisherman’s Ring and the pallium, signifying his spiritual succession from Saint Peter. In his homily, he called for unity within the Church and urged global efforts toward peace, particularly in war-torn regions such as Ukraine and Gaza.

Among the dignitaries present were U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, underscoring the international significance of the occasion. The Pope’s message resonated beyond the Vatican, as he emphasized the need to reject hatred, violence, and economic exploitation.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American to hold the papal office, was elected on May 8 following the passing of Pope Francis. His inauguration marks a new chapter for the Catholic Church, as he pledges to govern with humility and a commitment to social justice.
