President Bola Tinubu has officially commissioned the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. The state-of-the-art facility, developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London, is set to revolutionize medical care in West Africa.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of healthcare sovereignty, stating that the AMCE is a testament to Africa’s ability to compete globally in medical excellence. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President highlighted the centre’s role in reducing medical tourism, providing specialized care, and fostering local expertise.

The AMCE boasts cutting-edge medical technology, including the largest stem cell laboratory in West Africa, a 3 Tesla MRI, and a 256-Slice CT scanner, ensuring ultra-high-resolution imaging for advanced diagnostics. The facility will initially operate with 170 inpatient beds, expanding to 500 beds in its second phase

In addition to patient care, the AMCE will serve as a hub for medical research and training, collaborating with institutions such as King’s College London and the University of Wisconsin to develop a new generation of African medical specialists.
