In a controversial statement that is already drawing global criticism, U.S. President Donald J. Trump took to social media to mock European nations for commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Trump, known for his blunt rhetoric, declared: “Why is Europe celebrating? We’re the ones that won the war. Without America, they’d all be speaking German.”

“While American contributions to the Allied victory were immense and essential, this type of rhetoric diminishes the sacrifices of millions across Europe and the Soviet Union,” said Dr. Eleanor Price, a historian at the University of Cambridge. “It risks turning a moment of unity and remembrance into a point of division.”

The comments, posted on his social media platform Truth Social, came as European leaders gathered across the continent to mark Victory in Europe (VE) Day with solemn ceremonies honoring the millions who died in the conflict. Trump’s remarks quickly overshadowed international commemorations, sparking backlash from historians, veterans’ groups, and foreign leaders.

The president has long criticized U.S. allies for what he sees as an overreliance on American military and economic support, particularly within NATO. His latest remarks are in keeping with his past commentary but have taken on new weight given the sensitive nature of WWII remembrance.
