President Donald Trump Pledges to End Birthright Citizenship for Children of Undocumented Immigrants

Donald Trump, recently elected as the 47th President of the United States, has pledged to end birthright citizenship for future children born to undocumented immigrants.

Reviving a stance from his previous term, Trump had frequently voiced opposition to automatic citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants but did not implement such a policy.

He argued that birthright citizenship, which has been interpreted as part of the 14th Amendment for over a century, was misapplied under “Biden’s current policies,” though it remained unchanged even during Trump’s first administration.

On May 30, 2023, Trump shared a video reaffirming his commitment to this plan, stating that he would sign an executive order on his first day back in office to clarify that the children of undocumented immigrants born in the U.S. would not automatically receive citizenship. “As part of my plan to secure the border, I will sign an executive order making it clear to federal agencies that, under the correct interpretation of the law, future children of illegal aliens will not receive automatic U.S. citizenship,” Trump announced.
