President Bola Tinubu is set to depart Abuja for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday to attend the 19th G20 Leaders Summit scheduled for November 18 and 19.
The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will gather leaders from the world’s largest economies to address pressing global challenges.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced the trip in a statement, highlighting that the theme of this year’s summit is “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Discussions will center on combating global poverty and hunger, advancing energy transition, and promoting sustainable development.
Onanuga emphasized Nigeria’s longstanding advocacy for the reform of global governance institutions, noting the country’s strong case for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
“The summit will tackle issues such as hunger and poverty, institutional reforms, sustainable development, and energy transition,” Onanuga stated. “Nigeria has consistently championed these causes and continues to present itself as a deserving candidate for greater global leadership roles.”
President Tinubu is also expected to engage in bilateral talks with other world leaders on the sidelines, focusing on Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms in areas like agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
Accompanying the President is a high-level delegation, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Livestock Development Mukhtar Maiha, and Minister of Arts, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity Hannatu Musawa.
