The private autopsy and toxicology analysis conducted by the family of late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, have been concluded.
In June 2024, the Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, granted the family permission to conduct an independent autopsy and toxicology tests, following their rejection of the earlier government-conducted autopsy, which was deemed inconclusive.
A family source revealed to The PUNCH that the results have been ready since December 2024. The source stated:
> “The private autopsy has been concluded, and the result is currently with the forensic pathologist contracted by the family. The result was ready since December, and the pathologist is waiting to present it in court.”
The family pursued this independent investigation to address suspicions surrounding Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023. The singer’s body was initially exhumed by the police for an autopsy nine days after his burial, but the results were inconclusive due to decomposition.
A toxicology report from June 2024 revealed traces of Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, in Mohbad’s system, but not in lethal concentrations.
Advocacy For Justice
The Critical Thinkers Group, a coalition of concerned citizens, has called for the resumption of the coroner’s inquest into Mohbad’s death, which was suspended in September 2024 following a court order.
The group’s U.S. chapter issued a statement emphasizing the importance of reopening the inquest to hear testimonies from key witnesses, including Naira Marley, Sammy Larry, Nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe, and the family’s pathologist. They argued that the suspension has delayed justice and clarity.
The group stated:
> “We call on the Magistrate to set a new date for the proceedings and ensure the fact-finding process progresses to the High Court.”
Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, has also remained vocal in his pursuit of justice, urging the police to probe the singer’s wife, Omowunmi, and demanding a DNA test on their son, Liam.
The matter remains a significant concern, with calls for transparency and accountability in uncovering the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s tragic death.
