Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both scored twice as Manchester United thrashed Everton 4-0 in Ruben Amorim’s first Premier League home game in charge.
After a 1-1 draw against Ipswich in Amorim’s debut last weekend, United looked a transformed side. Rashford opened the scoring in the 34th minute, his low shot deflecting off Jarrad Branthwaite following a Bruno Fernandes corner. Seven minutes later, Zirkzee, making his first Premier League start since September, doubled the lead with a close-range finish from another Fernandes assist after Branthwaite’s defensive error.
Everton had started brightly, with Beto squandering a couple of early chances, but their collapse was swift. Just 20 seconds into the second half, sloppy play allowed Amad Diallo to set up Rashford for a clinical second goal. Amad then pounced on another defensive mistake from Everton, stealing the ball from James Tarkowski before setting up Zirkzee, who finished calmly to make it 4-0.
Zirkzee’s second goal capped a ruthless display from Manchester United, who took full advantage of just five shots on target to secure the convincing win. The result lifted United to ninth in the Premier League, while Everton’s winless run in the league stretched to five games. Their failure to score in four consecutive matches leaves them just two points above the relegation zone in 15th place.
For Amorim and his side, it was a hugely positive afternoon, following Thursday’s Europa League victory over Bodo/Glimt, and a performance that provided a strong start to his reign at Old Trafford.
