In a groundbreaking move, referees at this summer’s Club World Cup in the United States will wear bodycams, providing a unique viewing experience for fans. The footage captured by the bodycams will be made available to broadcasters during matches, offering a new angle on the game.
According to Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the Fifa referees committee, “It is a good chance to offer the viewers a new experience, in terms of images taken from a perspective, from an angle of vision which was never offered before.”
The use of bodycams is not entirely new, as Jarred Gillett became the first referee to wear one during a Premier League game in May 2024. The technology was also trialled in English grassroots football and has been used in Major League Soccer.
The Club World Cup, which runs from June 15 to July 13, will feature 32 teams and will be played every four years from the summer of 2025.
