Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja today as proceedings commenced on contempt charges related to her ongoing lawsuit challenging her suspension from the Senate.
The legal dispute, which has drawn national attention, stems from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension following allegations of misconduct. The Senator had previously sought an injunction to prevent disciplinary action against her, but the Senate proceeded with her suspension despite the court’s restraining order.
In a video today, Justice Binta Nyako presided over arguments from both sides, including claims that Akpoti-Uduaghan violated a court directive by making public statements on social media regarding the case. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, also faces contempt allegations filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan, accusing him and other Senate officials of disregarding judicial orders.
Legal representatives for both parties presented their cases, with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s counsel arguing that her actions did not constitute contempt, while the Senate’s legal team maintained that her statements undermined the integrity of the court’s ruling.
