A discussion on X about the father of stand-up comedy in Nigeria took an interesting turn when Seyi Law countered a claim that Gbenga Adeboye was the pioneer. Instead, Seyi Law firmly credited Ali Baba as the one who brought national and international recognition to the craft.

According to Seyi Law, while Gbenga Adeboye may have been an early figure in Nigerian comedy, Ali Baba’s impact on the industry’s structure and business aspects cannot be ignored. Seyi Law argued that Ali Baba’s contributions went beyond just being a comedian, as he taught many others the professionalism and skills needed to succeed.

Seyi Law also highlighted Ali Baba’s impressive achievements, including a notable six-hour comedy performance featuring entirely original material without repetition. This feat, Seyi Law said, earned Ali Baba his reputation as the “king” of Nigerian stand-up comedy.

By setting the record straight, Seyi Law aimed to give Ali Baba the recognition he deserves for his significant role in shaping the Nigerian comedy scene into what it is today.
