South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol Banned From Leaving Country Over Failed Martial Law Attempt

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has been banned from leaving the country after opposition politicians accused his party of orchestrating a “second coup” by refusing to impeach him over last week’s failed declaration of martial law.

Bae Sang-up, Immigration Services Commissioner at the Justice Ministry, confirmed the travel ban during a parliamentary hearing on Monday.

Yoon’s attempt to impose martial law last Tuesday ended after just six hours when lawmakers clashed with soldiers inside the parliament building before voting to overturn the order.

According to South Korea’s constitution, the president remains head of the government and commander-in-chief unless incapacitated or resigned.
