Former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexual assault for kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup medal ceremony. Spain’s High Court has ordered him to pay a €10,800 (£8,942) fine but acquitted him of coercion charges.

Court Ruling and Restrictions

<span;>- Rubiales has been banned from contacting Hermoso and must stay at least 200 meters away from her for one year.

<span;>- Three former federation officials—Jorge Vilda (World Cup-winning coach), Rubén Rivera (ex-RFEF marketing head), and Albert Luque (former sporting director)—were acquitted of coercion charges.

*The Incident & Aftermath*
During Spain’s medal presentation in Sydney, after their historic victory over England, Rubiales grabbed Hermoso by the head and kissed her on the lips. The act, witnessed by millions worldwide, sparked outrage, protests, and calls for his resignation.

Rubiales defended his actions, calling it an “act of affection” and claimed Hermoso consented, but the player refuted this in court, stating the incident “stained one of the happiest days of my life.”

*The Impact on Spanish Women’s Football*
The controversy fueled a “Me Too”-style movement in Spain’s women’s football, highlighting issues of sexism and inequality in the sport.

After weeks of resistance, Rubiales resigned in September 2023 following a FIFA suspension and an investigation by Spanish authorities. Despite his conviction, he has vowed to appeal the ruling.
