State Governments Distribute Over N16bn in Ramadan Palliatives to Support Muslims

As the annual Ramadan fast began on Saturday, several state governments across Nigeria have unveiled relief packages for Islamic clerics, religious organizations, and the Muslim community.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, officially declared March 1, 2025, as the first day of Ramadan after confirming the sighting of the crescent moon. Following his announcement, state governments commenced the distribution of Ramadan palliatives, while others finalized plans to do so.

Breakdown of Ramadan Palliatives by States

Sokoto Allocates N1.28bn

The Sokoto State Government set aside N1.28bn for feeding and relief distribution during Ramadan. The Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Dr. Jabir Maihula, said the initiative is part of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s commitment to poverty alleviation and religious support.

The number of Ramadan feeding centers in the state was increased from 130 to 155, with N998m allocated to provide daily meals for 20,000 fasting Muslims. The feeding program includes rice, millet, chicken, bean cake (akara), fruits, water, and dates.

An additional N285m was earmarked for financial aid to Islamic clerics and organizations. Senior Islamic scholars will receive N200,000 each, while 100 Ulamas will get N100,000 each. Islamic teachers, Imams, and Mu’adhins (prayer callers) will also receive financial support and food supplies.

Jigawa Allocates N4.8bn

Jigawa State announced a N4.8bn package to support vulnerable people during Ramadan. Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sagir Musa, said the feeding program, jointly funded by the state and local governments, will increase the number of feeding centers from 609 to 630.

Each center will provide three daily meals—Kunu, Kosai, and Jollof rice—for 300 persons per day.

Katsina, Kano Vote N10.3bn

The Katsina State Government allocated N2.3bn for food distribution, including grains, to support fasting Muslims. Some of the grains will be distributed for free to elderly citizens, while others will be sold at subsidized rates.

In Kano, Governor Abba Yusuf approved N8bn for Ramadan feeding programs. During the distribution of 1,250 cartons of dates donated by Saudi Arabia, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, confirmed that relief efforts would commence immediately.

Borno Provides 250,000 Bags of Rice

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum announced the distribution of 250,000 bags of rice and grains as palliatives for fasting Muslims. According to his aide, Abdurrahman Bundi, the initiative aims to mitigate the effects of last year’s flood disaster on residents.

Distribution has already begun, with 100,000 beneficiaries in Maiduguri and 150,000 across 25 local government areas.

Other States Join Ramadan Support Efforts

  • Nasarawa: The state government has disbursed undisclosed financial support to ministries, departments, and agencies for Ramadan relief.
  • Plateau: Plans to distribute grains and relief packages to the Muslim community.
  • Osun: Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration is preparing Ramadan and Lent relief packages for workers.
  • Gombe: Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has set up Ramadan palliative distribution committees to ensure fair allocation.
