Silvan Wallner, a 22-year-old Swiss midfielder, has unexpectedly announced his retirement from professional football, citing his desire to devote himself to his Christian faith.

Wallner, who began his career with FC Zurich in 2020, accumulated over 100 appearances playing for Wil, BW Linz, and FC Zurich. He signed a two-year contract with BW Linz just last September.

In a statement released by Blau-Weiß Linz, Wallner explained, “As a devout Christian, I’ve come to realize the importance of following Jesus Christ and observing the biblical day of rest. This means I no longer wish to play professionally on Saturdays.”

Wallner emphasized that his decision is a personal conviction, adding, “I’m not yet a member of any church, but I feel called to prioritize my faith.”

He expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his career, saying, “I thank everyone who accompanied and supported me in my sporting journey.”
