Timaya Calls Out Government Over Farmland Destruction in Bayelsa

Nigerian singer Timaya has voiced his frustration over the destruction of farmlands in Bayelsa State, calling on the government to intervene.

Taking to his X account, the music star lamented the situation, saying, “Pls the government should do something. They are destroying farms in Bayelsa. Aboki, take your cow inside and feed them. This is so sad.”

His outcry comes amid growing concerns over herders allegedly encroaching on farmlands in the state, causing significant losses to farmers.

In recent months, reports of similar incidents have sparked protests. In March 2025, women from Yenizue-Gene and Okutukutu communities in Yenagoa barricaded Melford Okilo Road, protesting against alleged harassment, rape, and destruction of their crops by herdsmen. The demonstrators displayed damaged cassava tubers and plants to highlight the impact of these activities.

The Bayelsa State government has previously taken measures to curb open grazing. In January 2022, the state’s task force impounded 44 cows found roaming in restricted areas of Yenagoa as part of the enforcement of the anti-open grazing law. However, despite such efforts, farmland destruction has persisted, raising concerns about the effectiveness of existing regulations.

Timaya’s public appeal underscores the urgent need for government intervention to protect local farmers and prevent further damage to agricultural lands in Bayelsa.
