A devastating midair collision between an American Eagle jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport has left all passengers feared dead.

American Eagle Flight 5342, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was arriving from Wichita, Kansas, when it collided with the Army aircraft late yesterday. The crash sent both aircraft plunging into the Potomac River, where rescue operations have now shifted to a recovery mission. So far, dozens of bodies have been pulled from the water.

The U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter was carrying three people at the time of the crash, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed.

Among the victims were American figure skaters, coaches, and family members returning from a training camp in Wichita, according to U.S. Figure Skating. Russian state media also confirmed that Russian figure skaters and coaches were on board the ill-fated flight.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed condolences, saying, “Certainly, I speak for the people of Washington, 700,000 of us, who are extremely sorry for the families who are experiencing loss tonight.”

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the tragic collision as recovery efforts remain ongoing.
