During a meeting on March 24, Mr. Trump reportedly referred to Mr. Musk as a “patriot” and noted that “he has never asked me for a thing.” Then, speaking in the Oval Office on Monday, the president stated that Musk would eventually return to focusing on his businesses.
An official stated that Mr. Musk is expected to step down at the end of his 130-day tenure as a special government employee, which would be on May 30. However, it remains uncertain whether he will depart on that date.
The White House previously announced that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a temporary organization, would be dissolved on July 4 next year, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States.
This follows Mr. Musk’s recent statement that some members of his DOGE team have been receiving daily death threats. His push to downsize the U.S. federal government has also sparked criticism.
Within weeks, entire agencies were dismantled, and tens of thousands of federal employees—out of the 2.3 million workforce—were either dismissed or chose to resign. The cuts recommended by DOGE have also led to multiple lawsuits in state and federal courts.
