President Donald Trump issued a stark warning Monday night on his Truth Social platform, urging civilians in Iran’s capital to “immediately evacuate Tehran,” amid renewed tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump, who is currently attending the G7 summit, is expected to leave the gathering early, according to a statement from the White House released Tuesday morning. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will also depart ahead of schedule, CBS News reports.
In his social media post, Trump criticized Iranian leadership for not accepting a proposed nuclear agreement during his administration.
“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life,” Trump wrote. “Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”
The comments come amid growing international concern over Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, which have exceeded levels permitted under prior agreements. Tehran’s nuclear ambitions have drawn condemnation from multiple governments, especially Israel, which has long warned of the potential threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran.
Despite his strong rhetoric, Trump has previously stated that he does not support direct U.S. military intervention in the region. Still, his comments are likely to escalate diplomatic tensions, as Western leaders weigh responses to Iran’s nuclear advancements.
