A lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Oguejiofor Ujam, who was kidnapped on Sunday evening, has escaped from captivity.

Enugu State Police Spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the escape in a statement on Tuesday.

Ujam, a professor and Dean of the School of General Studies, was abducted along Opi-Nsukka-Ugwogo-Nike Road in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area.

According to Ndukwe, police foiled a separate kidnap attempt on Monday at 7:10 p.m. along the same road, leading to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, two magazines with 22 rounds, and a chain of 39 live ammunition.

The intense gun battle forced the suspects to flee with gunshot wounds. A subsequent operation to apprehend the fleeing suspects resulted in Ujam’s escape from his abductors.
