Hollywood actor Val Kilmer, best known for his roles in iconic films such as Top Gun and Batman Forever, has passed away at the age of 65. Kilmer, who also starred in The Doors (1991), Tombstone, and Heat, died from complications of pneumonia on Tuesday in Los Angeles, his daughter, Mercedes, confirmed to US media.

Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, but he fought through the illness and was reported to have recovered. However, a tracheotomy surgery he underwent during his treatment left him with a significantly altered voice, and it also impacted his ability to continue acting in the same way. Despite these challenges, Kilmer made a triumphant return to the big screen in 2022, reprising his famous role as Iceman alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick.

Kilmer’s diverse body of work, including standout performances as Jim Morrison in The Doors, a memorable Western role in Tombstone, and his gripping turn in Heat, has left an indelible mark on Hollywood. His contributions to film and his resilience in the face of adversity will continue to be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.

In 2021, Kilmer released a documentary titled Val, which offers an intimate look into his life and career. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, showcases 40 years of home videos, including footage of Kilmer speaking with a voice box after undergoing surgery for throat cancer.

Val Edward Kilmer was born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, growing up in a middle-class family. His parents were Christian Scientists, a faith he would continue to follow throughout his life.

At the age of 17, Kilmer became the youngest student ever to be accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, one of the world’s top drama conservatories.

Kilmer made his mark in the 1980s with comedic roles in Top Secret! (1984) and Real Genius (1985). He later solidified his place in Hollywood history as Iceman, the rival to Tom Cruise’s Maverick in Top Gun (1986), one of the defining films of the decade.

He went on to star in the fantasy film Willow and the crime thriller Kill Me Again, both of which featured British actress Joanne Whalley. The couple married in 1988 and had two children together.

Kilmer showcased his remarkable range by portraying iconic rock star Jim Morrison in The Doors, a role that brought him widespread acclaim 20 years after Morrison’s death.

Other notable roles include his portrayal of Doc Holliday in Tombstone and his appearance alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat, both of which were critical and commercial successes.

In 1995, Kilmer took on the role of Batman in Batman Forever, following Michael Keaton’s departure from the franchise. While the film was a box office hit, it received mixed reviews, and Kilmer chose not to return for the sequel.

He also starred in the 1997 remake of The Saint, taking over Roger Moore’s role, and appeared alongside Marlon Brando in the infamous The Island of Dr. Moreau. The film became one of Hollywood’s most notorious flops, and its director, John Frankenheimer, vowed never to work with Kilmer again, citing his difficult behavior on set.

Despite the controversies, Kilmer’s legacy as a versatile and dynamic actor remains intact.
