The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has taken swift action against the planned mass marriage of 100 girls in Niger State, petitioning the Inspector-General of Police and seeking a court injunction to halt the event

According to the Cable, Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, had announced plans to sponsor the wedding as part of his constituency project, claiming he would provide materials and pay dowries for the bridegrooms.

However, the Minister has condemned the plan, stating that it is unacceptable and prioritizes the girls’ future.

She has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the issue and ensure the girls’ education and vocational training.

The Minister emphasized that the Child’s Right Act will be upheld, and the consent, ages, and suitability of the girls’ potential husbands will be scrutinized.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the Minister asserted, “I have written to the Speaker, petitioned the IG of police, and filed for an injunction to stop the planned event on May 24th until a thorough investigation is conducted. We will not tolerate any form of exploitation or coercion.

The future of these girls and their potential children must be protected.”
