The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has adjourned the arraignment of Yahaya Bello, the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, until November 14, 2024. Bello faces 16-count charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
At the Thursday hearing, prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo requested the adjournment, citing the 30-day duration of the public summons issued against Bello. Oyedepo expects Bello to appear in court on November 14.
Counsel to the second defendant, JB Daudu, objected, arguing that the defendants should not be held in custody due to Bello’s absence. Daudu requested their discharge, noting they have been detained for over a month.
Justice Maryann Anenih rejected the oral bail application, ordering the defendants to submit a formal application. The court adjourned until November 14 and 20 for Bello’s response to the summons and/or arraignment.
The case involves 16 counts of alleged fraud totaling N110.4 billion. Bello’s absence has delayed the arraignment, sparking debate over the defendants’ continued detention. The November 14 hearing is expected to bring clarity to the proceedings.
