Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ile-Ife, has urged Nigerians to take proactive steps to improve the country rather than placing blame solely on the government.

Speaking in Akure, Ondo State, on Friday during the official showcase of the Ojaja Smart City project, Ogunwusi explained that addressing the country’s housing deficit inspired him to launch the initiative. “Many positive changes can happen in this country if we believe in ourselves and in Nigeria. As we take steps, our housing deficit will gradually reduce,” he stated.

He emphasized that focusing on solutions, rather than lamenting challenges, is essential. “We know there’s a housing shortage, but we need to work with what we have to achieve results,” he said. Ogunwusi also encouraged Nigerians to support local businesses, noting that 90 percent of the materials for the Ojaja Smart City were sourced domestically.

The Ooni described the project as a 100,000-square-meter development designed to address housing needs. “We need to buy and produce in Nigeria, including for our housing needs,” he added. “Our project here is a city of its own. It spans over 100,000 square meters, and we’re showcasing what’s possible in Nigeria. We don’t need to wait for the government to do everything, and I believe the country will improve if we actively support the government. Rather than constantly blaming the government, we should ask ourselves what we’re each doing for Nigeria.”
